Nutrition is an important component of addiction treatment that is often overlooked. Fentanyl and crystal meth addiction ravages the body, and individuals at Palm View have access to nutritional support to address the physical health issues that have arisen as a result of their substance use. Our on-site nutritionist meets with the clients early on in their treatment experience to educate them on the impact of diet on their mental health as well as to answer any questions they may have relevant to their dietary needs.
One of the primary goals of nutrition in addiction treatment is to address any nutritional deficiencies that may be contributing to or exacerbating an individual’s addiction. Substance use can lead to poor eating habits, which can result in deficiencies in essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and protein. Nutritional deficiencies can also contribute to physical health problems such as gastrointestinal issues, immune dysfunction, and fatigue.
In addition to addressing nutritional deficiencies, nutrition can also play a role in helping individuals manage the physical symptoms of addiction and withdrawal. For example, individuals in detoxification may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and dehydration, which can be managed through proper hydration and the consumption of nutrient-dense foods. Nutrition can also help individuals make lifestyle changes that can support their recovery. For example, as mentioned prior, Palm View offers nutrition education and cooking classes to help clients develop healthy eating habits. These programs help our AHCCCS clients learn how to make healthy food choices and prepare meals that support their recovery over the long term.
In addition, nutrition can play a role in managing co-occurring mental health disorders that may be contributing to an individual’s addiction. For example, individuals with depression may benefit from foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, while individuals with anxiety may benefit from foods that are high in magnesium.
Nutrition is an important component of Palm View’s drug rehabilitation program. When aligned, it will help clients address nutritional deficiencies, manage the physical symptoms of addiction and withdrawal, make lifestyle changes that support recovery, and manage co-occurring mental health disorders.
